The Process

The basic steps of the process are relatively straight forward.

First, the components are attached to a jig or satellite and undergo an anti-static cleaning process.

Plasma cleaning takes place inside the vacuum chamber.

A base lacquer is then applied to increase gloss levels and promote adhesion. The parts are then cured before undergoing the metalising process.

Next vacuum metalising, or PVD (physical vapour deposition) takes place inside the chamber where a metal (usually aluminium) is evaporated under vacuum onto the parts.

Afterwards a clear or tinted coloured top lacquer is added as required.

Alternatively the protector or "in-chamber top coat" can be applied.
